The unhulled seeds of the Sesamum indicum plant are called black sesame seeds, and it has a somewhat stronger flavour than white sesame seeds. Because of its crispy texture and nutty flavour,it is used in Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines. One of the world's oldest spices, it is believed to have originated in Africa but is today farmed in Guatemala, southern Asia, and the Mediterranean.
