The Ficus carica tree, which is native to the Middle East and Western Asia, produces figs. The common fig is native to Asiatic Turkey and northern India, although wild seedlings can be found in most Mediterranean nations; it is grown in warm climates. They are renowned for their chewy texture and sweet flavour and are used in baking and cooking as well as as a snack.  
In the Mediterranean region, the fig is so commonly utilised, both fresh and dried, that it is dubbed "the poor man's food."
